A video showed up on Youtube from Peter Wyeth‘s old band Kookaburra. The ‘London’ EP is probably my favourite bit of engineering/mixing, even 12 or 13 (or more?) years after.Am very very proud of that EP : three songs and an extended mix… I must dig it out and get it uploaded.
Anyhow, someone’s cobbled a video for one of the tracks. Still sounds amazing, even if I do say so myself.
Mastered by Robin Junga .. and that was the start of an ongoing (with a decade’s gap) professional relationship.
Other news: I Am In Love asked me to remix their new single, so started that tonight, and cleared the garage ready for tomorrow’s plasterboarding. Bring it on!
Took the three bits of plasterboard down I managed to put UP over the weekend… all in preparation for a ‘real man’ to help me plasterboard the whole space on friday.
Thank the lord.
Whilst fiddling in the studio yesterday I had the Modern Lovers on my Ipod. I dip in and out of Jonathan Richman.
This is still my fave. So sad. When he sings “i can’t stand what you do, I’m in love with your eyes’ it makes me well up a bit.
Attempted to start plasterboarding the studio.. and you have to start with the roof. Spent a few hours doing it…. but it’s just too much to do it alone: I tried cutting it into smaller pieces.. that’s not a great idea in terms of finish..dropped one and ruined it….so, gave up and I’ll get help for a day.
I ache!
So, been finishing the mixes for Hannah Brien.. pretty much there. Last tweaks now: little lists to and fro.
Finished Rockwooling the walls in the studio, and started the plasterboarding…… managed to get a piece on the ceiling using a clever method of making some supports and screwing them in. Flipping heck, even cut in half it weighs a ton, though, so I need to nail some more supports in the ceiling beams… will take a while.
Borrowed a Focusrite VRM box today: for those not in the know, it’s a box you use to simulate (via clever software) different speakers and environments. More details here
I checked it out on a couple of mixes I’m working on: one is proper bass-heavy: really subby kick, subby rolling bass and a live bass: sounded honky as anything through the VRM : ‘uurgh, not impressed’ I thought.. til I loaded up a few more tracks where I knew the bass was balanced. Low and behold the VRM translated the mixes really well. In short, with only half an hour with the little box, the hard to mix frequencies on headphones were revealed in an instance. WIll check out the mix I’m struggling with tomorrow in the studio over a few speakers… (the brands in the studio are modeled on the VRM, so should be interesting).. I fear the VRM is correct! So, when you’re forced to mix without speakers, this seems like an excellent way to do it. Will definitely try some more mixes out down this path. For 80 odd quid, seems a steal.
