Uber-one-person-army-talent, JJ Lovegrove released a killer album earlier this year….’History Is The Struggle of Becoming’ ..produced by Ed Harcourt and mastered by me.
…well I met up with JJ at the Great Escape and over a glass of wine suggested I hooked her up with some students at NTU to record a few piano/vocal versions of some of her album’s songs on the lovely Steinway Grand in studio 1. She was so well prepped, she ended up recording a version of every single track on the album…..all live.
I was on mixing duties, and added some static and radio sounds on one of the songs… and treat the mixing more like an exploration into little audio journeys…. some nice analogue tape delays and other little tricks you wouldn’t normally associate with a piano/vocal mix….
….which triggered JJ reimagining how she could develop these new versions into a sonic scrapbook…new found sounds, some extra drones, some extra synths and spoken word parts into a single continuous piece of art. And here’s the result…’The Struggle of Becoming Is History’
